EAT BULAGA FRANCHISED AFTER 33 YEARS
When "Eat Bulaga" premiered 33 years ago on July 30, 1979, those who grew up watching the show started chanting "Mula Aparri hanggang Jolo" that eventually evolved into "Mula Batanes hanggang Jolo".
Now for those born later (since 2000 until now), they will be chanting "Mula Pilipinas hanggang Indonesia".
The country's longest running noontime show has started to export their trademark fun and excitement to the world's largest archipelago and the world's largest Muslim nation. In fact, the Indonesian version of "Eat Bulaga", entitled "Eat Bulaga Indonesia", already started airing last July 16, 2012 over SCTV (Surya Citra Televisi), the number 1 network in Indonesia.
It is interesting to note that it was an SCTV executive Harsiwi Achmad who made an effort to bring "Eat Bulaga" to Indonesia after seeing some episodes on Youtube. And thanks to a Filipino mediator Gerry de Guzman, who works as Marketing Creative for SCTV, all efforts to import "Eat Bulaga"'s format and bring it to Indonesia was made possible.
So after two weeks, how did "Eat Bulaga Indonesia" fare in the ratings?
The good news is, the Indonesian version did very well in its timeslot. The show airs at 3:30 pm, Philippine time. And best of all, it's the number 1 show in the 2-4 pm timeslot besting other shows aired by other Indonesian networks.
It's also interesting to note that "Eat Bulaga"'s rich history on Philippine television has gotten more interesting with the franchise to Indonesia. It makes them the first Philippine TV show to be franchised internationally by other countries.
So brace yourselves because sooner or later, other TV shows will follow what "Eat Bulaga" just started. To "Eat Bulaga", happy anniversary and to "Eat Bulaga Indonesia", keep up the good work!
Terimakasi.

DENNIS TRILLO REMAINS A KAPUSO
For those who are wondering if Dennis Trillo will leave GMA Network for ABS-CBN, the reports are false.
The 32-year old actor just inked a contract with the Kapuso Network for three years last February 18, 2011. (Source: Dennis Trillo Remains a Kapuso; Signs Contract with GMA-7 Anew)
The said aforementioned deal was reportedly worth P45 million, making him one of the highest paid talents of the network (Source: BAGONG KONTRATA NI DENNIS TRILLO SA GMA-7 P45 MILLION ANG HALAGA!!!)
The rumors about Trillo's supposed transfer floated after he showed up during the premiere night of Star Cinema's "The Healing", which starred Batangas Gov. Vilma Santos and directed by Chito Rono.
Trillo's presence at the premiere night was due to the fact that he and actress Janice de Belen share the same manager in Popoy Caritativo, who also manages the careers of GMA's primetime star Marian Rivera and TV5's Mart Escudero. Janice is one of the cast members of the said movie and also a contract star of ABS-CBN where she is one of the hosts the Saturday talk show "Showbiz Inside Report". She is set to star soon in the upcoming Kapamilya teleserye "Ina, Kapatid, Anak".
Dennis originally started out in showbiz in 2002 when he was launched by ABS-CBN as one of the members of Star Circle Batch 9. His contemporaries included Alfred Vargas and Bea Alonzo. He appeared in soaps like "Pangako Sa 'Yo" and "Sa Dulo ng Walang Hanggan" until he named Popoy Caritativo as his new talent manager in 2003 and subsequently transferred to GMA-7 the same year. His first shows on GMA were the Sunday teen drama "Kahit Kailan" and the primetime soap "Twin Hearts". He was launched alongside Angel Locsin and Richard Gutierrez in the telefantasya "Mulawin" in 2004 that brought high ratings for the network.
His role the transvestite spy Inya in the period drama "Aishite Masu" won him awards and acclaim from various award-giving bodies. His latest movie appearance was in Cinemalaya's "Ang Katiwala".
Aside from being an award-winning actor, Dennis is also listed as one of the stockholders in the publicly-listed GMA Network (Source: List of Top 100 Stockholders As of 06/30/2012)

CHEATING: THE PRICE OF FAME
To quote a Korean song entitled "Please"...
"'Cause you're the cheater, a liar and a killer"
These words best describe "Twilight" star Kirsten Stewart when she admitted to have cheated on co-star and boyfriend Robert Pattinson by having a brief affair with "Snow White and the Huntsman" director Rupert Sanders. Sanders himself is also attached- married to model Liberty Ross with whom he has two children.
Pattinson was reportedly "heartbroken and humiliated" upon Stewart's admission to the affair, to which pictures of the actress and Sanders kissing went viral online.
Stewart issued a statement: "I'm deeply sorry for the hurt and embarrassment I've caused to those close to me and everyone this has affected. This momentary indiscretion has jeopardized the most important thing in my life, the person I love and respect the most, Rob. I love him, I love him, I'm so sorry."
Meanwhile Sanders has also issued an apology to his wife and kids: "I am utterly distraught about the pain I have caused my family. My beautiful wife and heavenly children are all I have in this world. I love them with all my heart. I am praying we can get through this together."
Cheating in Hollywood may seem to be a norm since its Golden Age. But for new generations of fans especially "Twilight" diehards, this is a bitter pill hard to swallow. Especially now that the "Twilight" saga will end soon with the release of the last movie "Breaking Dawn 2". It's also a risk for Kirsten as well after being name one of the highest-paid Hollywood actresses this year. But as the adage goes, "good or bad publicity is still publicity", there might be an instance that Kirsten may have Lady Luck still smiling at her career-wise. But what about lovelife?
Well we might say our last goodbyes anytime to the on-screen and off-screen romance of Kirsten Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

iDOLPHY
Today on July 25, 2012, Dolphy would have turned 84.
But as the adage goes, "The show must go on".
We remember this day as the day Dolphy was born. I recall that whenever his natal day approaches, there's always a two-hour birthday special aired on ABS-CBN complete with special guests, song and dance numbers, and of course, what's a Dolphy special if there's no comedy included? Siyempre, meron!
But when I was young, I was able to watch a Dolphy special in RPN-9 when "John en Marsha" was still airing. I was 7 years old then when Dolphy revealed on TV that he was 60 years old already while thanking loyal viewers that supported his movies and TV shows over the years.
I then figured out he was the same age as my grandmother, and also wondered if he will live longer to make us laugh.
Turns out, the answer is yes!
I was able to witness Dolphy's career fading back when I was Grade 3, when he eloped with rising singer/actress Zsa Zsa Padilla, who was then popular as Joey de Leon's leading lady in "Starzan" and "Starzan 2". I always hear priests during homilies mentioning Dolphy and Zsa Zsa as bad examples for Filipino relationships. But as they say, "love conquers all". Everyone was forgiven and the incident was forgotten as the public awaited for Dolphy's next career move when most of the press people were already considering De Leon's erstwhile sidekick Rene Requiestas as the new "Comedy King" following the success of "Pido Dida" and "Michael and Madonna".
It was in 1992 when ABS-CBN's new talk show "Showbiz Lingo" reported that the network had acquired the services of the Comedy King for a new show. It was on December 26, 1992 when Dolphy's new sitcom "Home Along da Riles" premiered on national TV. I was one of those who eagerly anticipated his return to television. I look up to him like a father when I watch his sitcom on TV weekly, because most of the time my real father is abroad as a seaman. A lot of life's lessons were learned while watching "Home Along da Riles".
In 1998, when Dolphy turned 70, he underwent a delicate heart bypass operation. I was confident that he will survive it but there was a moment when my aunt broke the news to me that he "died". For a minute, I could barely speak or move. To verify the "news", I turned on the radio and it turned out he was still alive. The reported comedian who died was his erstwhile comedy partner and friend, Babalu.
I was very busy with college already when I experienced it. I took Mass Communications with high hopes that I'll be able to work in the showbiz industry. While enjoying college life, I was able to watch Dolphy for the first time on the big screen in 2000 when his comeback movie "Daddy O, Baby O" was showing. Although he was a little bit rusty in that movie, I still enjoyed his comic antics. Best of all, I watched that movie with the whole family.
When I graduated in 2002, I briefly had a career as radio/events host, assistant director/extra for an indie movie and TV reporter in a span of one year. In 2003, I set foot in Manila trying my luck in show business while moonlighting as a call center agent. I tried my luck at the ABS-CBN writing workshops during that year and guess what? I almost bumped into Mang Dolphy when I went on a mini-studio tour on my own after I had that brief interview for the workshop. Want to know what happened? Read on...
After that brief interview, I decided to loiter around the whole ABS-CBN compound for about 2 hours after waiting on the line at the Audience Entrance area for also 2 hours. I was able to go through the different studios where I was able to see different celebrities readying for their turn in "ASAP" and "The Buzz". But when I saw Dolphy's son Vandolph, Bing Loyzaga and her daughter Alyssa Gibbs, and Aubrey Miles whom I had a brief chat, I realized that there was a taping of "Home Along the Airport" happening in the studio not far from "ASAP" and "The Buzz". I tried to sneak inside the "Home Along" studio but decided not to after realizing that the security guards might be there and drag me out.
That was quite a close encounter with the Comedy King. But in 2004, I had the chance to shake his hand when he attended the premiere night of "So Happy Together" at the Podium where his son Eric Quizon was one of the lead stars, the other is Kris Aquino. I was there as a member of Lucky 13, Mark Herras' fans club. Mark was also one of the cast members of the movie. I still remember telling Dolphy while shaking his hand: "Idol ko po kayo". After that moment, I entered the theater and watched the whole movie with former President Corazon Aquino and the Comedy King among the audience members.
I will never forget that day when I shook his hand. Surreal.
Mang Dolphy, happy birthday and I will never forget you.

CONCERT REVIEW: ANNEBISYOSA NO OTHER CONCERT IN BACOLOD
Anne Curtis rocked Bacolod during her concert last Saturday at the USLS Coliseum, Bacolod City (photo courtesy of Dr. Sario, from the website http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=93488549) |
Last July 21, 2012, Bacolod City proved it was ready to rock with Anne Curtis' highly-acclaimed concert tour series "ANNEBISYOSA NO OTHER CONCERT".
The sold-out event was held at the cavernous USLS Coliseum where it was filled to the rafters. People from all walks of life came to witness the concert everyone was talking about. And surely enough, they were not disappointed. The concert started at 9:00 pm with showbiz newcomer Nathan Serrano as front-act. He received a warm round of applause from the audience whom he serenaded with his own rendition of "Hinahanap-hanap Kita". After Serrano sang, the audience cheered louder when the lights dimmed and the band started playing the opening song that Anne Curtis will perform.
The moment Anne Curtis stepped into the USLS concert stage, there was loud cheer and applause everywhere. Anne opened the concert with a medley of songs from Rihanna.

Aside from the Rihanna medley, Anne also performed songs popularized by Katy Perry, Beyonce, Adele and Aegis while undergoing at 5 costume changes, all designed by renowned fashion designer Rajo Laurel. Even her special guests did not disappoint the audience at all. There was a friendly banter between Anne and best friend Luis Manzano while doing a duet of "Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang". Luis even brought the house down with his solo dance number with two members from the famous dance group G-Force to the tune of LMFAO's "I'm Sexy and I Know It".
Another special guest Jimmy Marquez from the now-defunct singing contest "Star in a Million" kept the audience laughing with his anecdotes and one-liners while showing his singing ability as well. But it was another special guest singer, former "Search for A Star" grand champion and now hitmaker Rachelle Ann Go that made a mark among Bacolod fans as she engaged in a singing showdown with Anne Curtis to the tune of Aerosmith's "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing". She was even generous enough to give Anne the spotlight when Anne belted out the last part of the song that earned a standing ovation among audiences.
The concert ended with Anne belting out Carly Rae Jepsen's big hit "Call Me Maybe" while people at the front row took the opportunity to come closer to the stage to take a snapshot of her.
It was a big success for the ANNEBISYOSA concert series which invaded Bacolod City with a bang! Anne Curtis sent love and smiles to Bacolod City through her songs, funny antics and fashion ways, and the people of Bacolod responded by coming in full force to support and love her more.

DOLPHY, 1928-2012
As of today, July 11, 2012, Philippine showbusiness' Comedy King Dolphy passed away. He was 83.
He made people laugh for more than six decades. Starting out on stage vaudevilles during the Japanese occupation era as Golay, he found fame and fortune making people laugh. After the war, he made a name as a comic relief to some of the biggest stars in the 1950's, until he was launched alongside Lolita Rodriguez in the movie adaptation of Mars Ravelo's "Jack en Jill".
When television started out in the '60s and was slowly making a name for a burgeoning industry, he was one of the pioneer talents of the pre-martial law ABS-CBN. His tandem with Panchito in "Buhay Artista" drew lots of laughter, especially with their song translation gags. Soon after, he started branching out as a producer, makinghis own movies that converted into hits.
During Martial Law, he became the unofficial padre-de-familia of Philippine Television when he headlined "John en Marsha" with versatile actress Nida Blanca. The phenomenal sitcom zoomed high in the ratings, and lasted 17 years on air.
His career was colorful, so was his lovelife. His various affairs with women resulted in having 18 children, but he proved to be a good provider. Soon after we got to see some of his children making a name for themselves, on the television and movies.
Despite all the success that he had, he remained humble. His status as top comedian became legendary when he gave a break to some aspiring stars. His generosity to some small workers in the industry is also a testament to how big his heart is.
His showbiz career withstood the tests of time. A true survivor even in real life when he dealt with internal family issues, death among his showbiz friends and contemporaries, and even dealing with his own health issues too.
Who would ever forget his successful showbiz comeback in the '90s via the sitcom "Home Along da Riles" when almost everybody considered him a has-been? Who would ever forget his comedies that dealt with various takes on Hollywood and in the Philippine society?
His jokes made us laugh. His personality will never be imitated or equaled. His legacy as a comedian will never be forgotten.
John Puruntong, Kevin Cosme, Facifica Falayfay...
Mang Dolphy... salamat sa sayang binigay niyo! Time to laugh with God as main audience.

THE FALL OF A TRIO
And so... the story ends for the Boston Celtics' Big Three.
Ray Allen, the mercurial shooting guard who ended his search for his first NBA championship in 2008 when he joined forces with Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce at Boston, has joined NBA rival current NBA Champions the Miami Heat, which had its own Big Three in LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh.
Some say that this move in effect brands Allen "a traitor" because of leaving the team that gave him a shot at winning the elusive NBA title, but for most people, it's Ray Allen's choice of "winning over winning($)".
Come to think of it, Allen just followed the mantra "If you can't beat them, join them" when his now former team the Celtics lost twice to Miami. The first series loss happened in 2011 when they faced the now-revamped Heat in the conference semifinals. The second encounter was in the recent Eastern Conference Finals when the Heat overcame a 2-3 deficit to chase the Celtics out of the title chase, arranging a memorable best-of-seven showdown with the Oklahoma City Thunder which the Heat won convincingly, 4-1 to become NBA champions.
With his Boston Celtics not getting past Miami for the last two years, it would be easy to conclude that Allen decided that playing in Miami is the best way to salvage any hopes for another NBA championship. But as it turns out, there are other personal issues surrounding Allen in Boston. First off is the reported rift between him and Celtics' rising star Rajon Rondo. And the second issue is the reported resentment of Allen towards the Celtics management when his name was constantly brought up in trade talks with other teams only to be shot down at the last minute. These reported trade talks emphasized the Celtics' alleged lack of respect to its Big 3 superstar.
Credit Heat president Pat Riley for engineering a successful free agency deal this year. I'm sure in the future, other NBA executives will follow "the Riley way" in recruiting NBA superstars to join their fold. But creating NBA super teams don't necessarily mean instant success on court. On paper it is a strong team. It still takes a willing head coach, a risky team of general managers and top level management, and cooperative star players and bench players to make a super team work.
